Behind the Scenes: Building a Better Personalization Experience (And Why It's Taking Longer Than Expected)

Hi friends! It's Elizabeth here, and I need to have a real conversation with you about our website. If you've been following along since my April 2025 update, you might remember me talking about big changes coming, like live previews, streamlined navigation, that magical "see your personalization before you buy" experience I kept promising. And if you're thinking, "Um, Elizabeth, it's February and I'm still not seeing all of that...". You're absolutely right. Let me tell you what's been happening behind the scenes.

The Reality of Building Something That Doesn't Exist

Here's what I learned in 2025: I'm trying to build something that genuinely doesn't exist in an "out of the box" solution. When I started Southern Supply, I was frustrated by the limitations of marketplace platforms—character limits that cut off meaningful personalization, clunky interfaces that made customizing products feel like work instead of joy, and zero ability to see what you're actually buying before checkout. I thought, "How hard could it be to build something better?"

Turns out? Really, really hard. After parting ways with the developer I mentioned last April (who, like others before them, overpromised and underdelivered), I was back at square one. I felt hopeful—maybe even a little naive—that I could figure this out quickly. Either find another developer, or roll up my sleeves and handle it internally.

The developer quotes I received ranged from $20,000 for basic menu fixes to over $80,000 for more comprehensive work. And after previous experiences with agencies that couldn't articulate a clear vision for what we were building, I just couldn't justify that risk. I know entrepreneurs are supposed to be risk-takers, but this particular gamble felt less like calculated risk and more like throwing money into a void.

The "Just Do It Yourself" Revelation

So I pivoted. I decided to hire help that could work in the business with me, day to day, truly understanding what we're building. Someone who could help get us to MVP (minimum viable product) level while I focused on orders and product development. Because my expertise is in operations - not technology.

But here's the thing about being a small business owner: the day-to-day doesn't stop just because you have big website dreams. Every single day, my first commitment is ensuring our team is getting your orders made with extreme quality and shipped quickly. Then there's photographing and listing new products, responding to customer messages, managing social media, dealing with the reality that every successful product we launch gets copied (sometimes word-for-word with stolen photos on sites like Shein and Temu), and oh yeah—being a present mom to two thriving girls with busy schedules.

By the time August rolled around and our busy season kicked into high gear, website progress ground to a halt. Most nights, after everything else was done, my brain would whisper, "Just work on it tomorrow when you're fresh." But tomorrow was always just as packed—or busier.

I also made some hiring mistakes. I brought on people who overpromised on their skillset and aptitude for tackling hard things, and I relied on them to move the website forward. That work never materialized the way I hoped.

The Turning Point

November brought a breakthrough...though not the kind you might expect.

I had hired someone new to tackle specific website tasks, like optimizing our listing images for faster loading times. After a few weeks of what felt like unnecessarily complicated explanations for why simple things were taking so long, I got fed up. I'm talking near-rage levels of frustration. I sat down, determined to figure out for myself whether these tasks were actually as complex as they were being made out to be.

Two hours later, I had cracked the image optimization problem.

Two. Hours. After spending tens of thousands of dollars across three different agencies and developers to do exactly this.

It was simultaneously depressing and empowering. The truth crystallized: I just need to do it myself. I need to carve out the time and do the tedious, unglamorous work of building out every listing, one by one. There's no shortcut. There's no substitute. And right now, in this chapter of Southern Supply's journey, I can't afford to outsource it effectively.

Where We Are Today (The Honest Truth)

What I can't deliver right now: Those fully three-dimensional, lifelike live previews I've been dreaming about. The ones where you see your exact text on your exact product in real-time, spinning in 360 degrees of glory. (But mark my words—one day!)

What we DO have today:

  • A personalization experience that's already better than what you'll find on Etsy or Amazon - no having to remember to write in multiple pieces of required information or not having a single listing with exactly the options you want
  • Multiple personalization fields on single products, like Topper Tag for ProTour where you might want a first name on one side and last name on the other (something Etsy literally can't support)
  • Live previews on select products (like our Stanley Quencher Topper Tags) that show your actual name and mockups of color combinations
  • Fast, responsive customer service

What I'm committed to building: An interim experience that achieves all the goals marketplace sites can't facilitate, and we'll do it in the cutest, most caring way possible.

Because personalization isn't just about putting a name on something. It's about creating something that's uniquely yours, whether it's a gift for someone you love or a little joy just for yourself.

Moving Forward

Coming out of our busy holiday season, my resolve is stronger than ever. Yes, it's taken longer than I thought (or said it would). Yes, I've learned some expensive lessons about what not to do. But I've also learned exactly what needs to happen next...and I'm the one who needs to make it happen.

I'm done waiting for the "perfect" solution or the "right" developer. I'm done with overpromises and underdelivery. I'm rolling up my sleeves and building this thing myself, one listing at a time, one feature at a time.

Will it happen overnight? No. Will there be setbacks? Probably. But here's what won't change: my commitment to creating the kind of personalization experience I wish existed when I started this journey.

The kind where you feel excited, not frustrated. Where customization feels fun, not complicated. Where you can actually see what you're buying before you buy it. The kind that I want to share with other personalization businesses one day - because it shouldn't be this hard.

Thank you

To every customer who's stuck with us through this messy, imperfect journey—thank you. Your patience means everything. Your orders keep this dream alive. Your feedback helps shape what we're building.

I'm sorry it's taken me this long to figure out that I'm the one who needs to build this. But I'm grateful I finally understand what needs to happen. And I promise you—we're going to get there. Not all at once, but steadily, intentionally, and with the same care we put into every order we ship.

Because personalization is deeply meaningful. And you deserve a website experience that reflects that.

With gratitude (and determination),
Elizabeth
